What’s the story?
Court challenges to President Donald Trump’s repeal of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) have focused on his alleged bias against Mexicans, who are the majority of DACA recipients. The program’s participants are more diverse than many realize, however, coming from as far away as Pakistan and Poland.
Who Uses DACA?
According to the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service, the top 24 countries of origin for DACA recipients involve Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, as well as Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Here’s a breakdown of those top 24, and how many DACA participants hail from each.
- Mexico 655,498
- El Salvador 31,963
- Guatemala 22,821
- Honduras 21,053
- South Korea 9,250
- Peru 9,472
- Brazil 8,128
- Ecuador 7,379
- Columbia 7,055
- Argentina 4,983
- Philippines 4,902
- Jamaica 4,231
- India 3,653
- Venezuela 3,349
- Dominican Republic 3,563
- Trinidad & Tobago 2,948
- Uruguay 2,413
- Costa Rica 2,200
- Bolivia 2,152
- Pakistan 1,880
- Poland 1,875
- Chile 1,817
- Nicaragua 1,762
- Nigeria 1,503
What do you think?
Do any of these numbers surprise you? Does the diversity of the program’s participants matter to you? Do you believe the president is pursuing the DACA repeal because of a bias against Mexicans or people of color generally? Do you support the repeal of DACA completely or hope Congress will step in and protect these young immigrants?
