What’s Congress Voting On? Week of September 11, 2017

by Countable | 9.14.17

The House will convene on Tuesday this week after cancelling Monday’s votes over the weekend because of Hurricane Irma because it wasn’t clear that members from the southeast would be able to travel to Washington, DC.

When it does start its work week, the House will consider a number of bills related to homeland security such as bills to bar from entry or deport foreign nationals who are members of criminal gangs, and to study the use of virtual currencies like Bitcoin by terror groups. It will also vote to pass an appropriations package that it spent much of last week debating amendments for.

The Senate is currently scheduled to convene on Monday, when a vote to start debate on a bill to set defense spending levels for fiscal year 2018 is expected. Its schedule for the rest of the week is yet to be announced.

Check here throughout the week to see the vote results and updates to the schedule.

Schedule subject to change. All times Eastern.

Fix the ACA and stop trying to sabotage it. People are hurting and dying while republicans are playing anti-anything Obama politics. And stop trying to derail the Russiagate hearings. Get the hearings back on track and make them public. If you need a closed door hearing, fine, just have the public one first.

I am hoping against hope that my members of Congress will take a clear-eyed look at the environmental disasters of the past three weeks and do everything possible to mitigate them. That means investing in infrastructure, especially flood control and protection of wetlands. Listen to the scientists about the impact of global warming on hurricane intensity; strengthen regulation of toxic waste and greenhouse gases. By no means should we waste a dime of taxpayers' money on an ineffective, symbolic border wall. We have the technology to do smarter enforcement. What we don't have is the luxury of time to waste before we do something about rising sea levels.

Shore up the ACA. Assist hurricane-stricken areas. Pay for it with tax increases on the top 10%. Legislate DACA. Pass a budget that prioritizes infrastructure, education, retraining of people in the fossil fuel industry. Fund climate change research and remediation. Reap the rewards for having improved the world.

Fix ACA, or Medicare for all, infrastructure spending is a must, tax cuts are not going to fix our country, we have to invest in it. Science, climate are important as we are going to spend $500 billion on Harvey and Irma repairs, and do nothing to stop it from getting any worse.

Again another week of no movement to pass tax and healthcare reform. All talk of behind the scenes and committees discussions leave the American people in the dark.

Oh my, how can Congress handle this heavy load. You think they should take the rest of the week off? A 4 day workweek sounds exhausting.

I have next to zero trust in seeing this congress do anything useful besides filling their pockets with money and be slave to big contributors. Congress manufactured problems and spends our money to solve them. We need a comprehensive campaign reform law to take the money out of our politics so maybe just maybe our law makers can get back to people's work and country first. Wishful thinking😰

When one is voting on behalf of the American people, a voice vote should never be acceptable. There is no accountability or responsibility for the actions/decisions of individual Congress members. The issues are too important to use voice vote which will impact each and every one of us, one way or another. It just seems like a lackadaisical way to make important decisions.
